HW 5 - Dominant Discourses Regarding Contemporary Foodways in the U.S.

I would say counting calories seem to be the dominant discourse among most people today. We see people continually counting calories, drastically cutting their intake suddenly to reach that so called perfect "image". Some even becoming unhealthy ,sending their metabolism into a place of starvation. But they other who fellow it with more safety , focusing on cutting their calorie intake slowly. Paying attention to how many calories they eat each day.

Instead other simply look to pick good food choices to spend their calories on. They go in between he line of calorie reduction and balanced meals at all times. This way has showed to be a effective way in the pursuit to lose weight, but it also promotes healthier eating habits in the long run.

Calorie counting seems to be a recycling trend.Just two decades ago it was the dieting fad .Anyone who wanted to lose weight drop watch the foods they ate during the day and count the number of calories they were having. Then it seemed to be replace by a the low-fat craze of the 1990’s and the low-carbohydrate of the early 2000's .But not more than ever dietitians and nutritionists are recommending going back to the calorie counting days.

HW 4 - Your Families' Foodways

My mom and grandma always say you can eat anything you want, aslong as its in moderation. They believed that eating what you want is a essential step to controlling your weight and also understanding food as a whole.

I slightly agree with this to a point . But I think It's important to be sure that while your eating what you want , remember "moderation" is key. So maybe instead of the candy bar and the soda, you just have the candy bar.But for most managing your weight and health doesn't require constant elimination of things you like. Instead it goes back to that key idea of "moderation" in all things, and realizing that what's necesrely good for you changes from situation to situation. Maybe if your real low on energy and need a quck pick me up maybe the best choice is the candy bar. Other times it might not be.

But that's for everyone to decide for themselve not some new diet or other regimen that controls what's right for you. I think we have to learn how to put more joy back into food, its become almost taboo too eat , I think we can all enjoy eating in our lifes while still successfully managing our health and weight. Moliere ones said "One must eat to live, not live to eat."

HW 3 - Food - Fast Food Insights and Green Market Realizations

No matter who you our, the chances of you eating fast food ones in your life is more than a possibility. But its not that we don't understand it's bad for us. I mean from doctors to health guru's we hear endless references to why we should not eat it. Its one of the main causes of obesity in both America and the world, including heart disease and high cholesterol. So the question still lies why do we continue to eat fast food even with knowing the price we end up paying in the end?

One simple reason I feel we all tend to overlook is just how "fast" Fast Food is .Well yeah, that's kind of implied in the name right? The speed of life has never been faster, with most of us on the go with someplace to be, we all feel at times like there just aren't enough hours in the day to take the time to make a good home cooked meal.Who has the time to make a huge, elaborate feast every day. Making it very impelling and convenient to have fast food. Which compared to slaving over a hot stove for hours , makes much more sense for some to get a meal in half that time.

Fast food is also very cheap. When you're low on cash what's best , go without, hungry or dip into the fast food chains that offer offer tons of quick, more than affordable meals. Tho is may be cheap , In my opinion you pay for it with lots of sugar and high cholesterol .

Another reason is for many fast food just simply tastes a lot better. I believe this is a total lie we've all bought into. Fast food restaurant's entice us to buy their products, but with all the money spent on making the food supposedly look delicious through commercials and pictures ,I wonder does it ever really taste that great? I know whenever I use to eat it I almost always felt disappointed with the taste and feel, just the overall quality sucked . I felt like I had a tire l in my stomach after eating it.

HW 2 - Food - Initial Thoughts

I believe the biggest impact on how a person will eat is where he grows up. For example a person raised in South America is far likelier than one in North Dakota to enjoy spicy foods. For a majority of us familiarity plays a big part in how we eat.

I also believe social factors, such as acceptance, can also influence how we eat. Our surrounding society influences our individual taste. Maybe that's why some foods coincide with certain nations and cultures. It appears to me that our appetite is based on our gender, cultural identity, race, and social class. Food's effect on lifestyles, social class, gender, and race our often over looked . For example families and individuals caut in economic hardships our forced mostly to eat what is cheap, most of these foods happen to be not as healthy as higher-priced foods, making these people suffer from a higher risk of health problems, such as heart disease or obesity.

In a lot of ways food is part of our identity. From a very young age were programmed our eating habits. We eat what our family eats and for the most part these habits do not tend to change.Food and eating is used as a way we accept new members into our group, to celebrate milestones, and to express religious or political beliefs.
